How to read the MLS table
Each row shows a team’s position (Pos), number of games played (P), wins (W), draws (D), losses (L), goals for (GF), goals against (GA), goal difference (GD) and total points (Pts). Teams are first ranked by points; if two or more teams are level on points the tie-breakers used by Major League Soccer are, in order: total wins, goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head record, and then, if still tied, disciplinary points (fewest red and yellow cards). The exact tie-breaking rules are set by the league.
Format
The league comprises 30 teams split into two conferences: Eastern Conference and Western Conference. Each club plays 34 regular-season matches, typically from late February or early March to October. The MLS standings reflect every team’s record within its own conference as well as overall, because the top finishers from each conference advance to the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Qualification & knockout rounds
There is no promotion or relegation in MLS; all 30 teams remain in the league each year. The team with the best overall regular-season record is awarded the Supporters’ Shield. The top clubs in each conference (usually the top seven or nine, depending on the season) qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, a knockout tournament that decides the league champion.
In addition, the highest-placed teams in the overall Major League Soccer table earn berths in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, while the winner of the U.S. Open Cup (for American sides) and the Canadian Championship (for Canadian clubs) also claim spots.
