How to read the Liga MX table

The column headers show: Pos (position), P (matches played), W (wins), D (draws), L (losses), GF (goals for), GA (goals against), GD (goal difference) and Pts (points). When two or more teams are level on points, the following tiebreakers are applied – in order: goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, and then disciplinary records. The exact tiebreaking rules are set by the league organiser, Liga MX.

Format

Liga MX consists of 18 teams. Each plays a 17‑match season in the Apertura (July–December) and another 17‑match season in the Clausura (January–May). The top four teams after the regular season qualify directly for the Liguilla quarter‑finals. Positions 5–12 enter a play‑in round to determine the remaining four quarter‑finalists. The champion is decided by a knockout tournament.

Promotion, relegation & qualification

The team with the lowest points‑per‑game average over the previous three seasons is relegated to the Ascenso MX. The Ascenso MX champion is promoted, subject to meeting stadium and financial criteria. For CONCACAF Champions Cup qualification, the champion and runner‑up of each short tournament earn a place. Additional spots may be awarded based on the aggregated table over the season.

What to watch in the table

  • Title race: With two tournaments per year, the fight for top spot in each phase is always intense.
  • Relegation battle: The team with the worst three‑year average is at risk of dropping down.
  • CONCACAF qualification: A high finish guarantees a spot in the Champions Cup.
  • Play‑off positioning: Top four secure a direct path to the quarter‑finals; mid‑table sides aim for the play‑in round.
  • Form and momentum: The table reveals which teams are peaking as the playoffs approach.
