How to read the League One table
Each row represents one of the 24 clubs in the EFL League One. The columns show: Pos (position), P (matches played), W (wins), D (draws), L (losses), GF (goals for), GA (goals against), GD (goal difference = GF − GA), and Pts (points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss).
If two or more teams are level on points, the common tiebreakers are: (1) goal difference, (2) goals scored, (3) head-to-head record between the tied teams. The exact tiebreaking rules are set by the EFL and may include a play-off match if required for promotion or relegation.
Format
Twenty-four teams compete across 46 rounds (a double round-robin, home and away). The season typically runs from early August to the first weekend of May. There is no mid-season split — every club plays each other twice. At the end of the season the top two teams are promoted automatically, teams placed 3rd to 6th enter the promotion play-offs, and the bottom four are relegated to League Two.
Promotion, relegation & qualification
Promotion: The League One champions and the runners-up win automatic promotion to the Championship. The third promotion place is decided by a play-off tournament involving the teams finishing 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th (two semi-finals and a final at Wembley).
Relegation: The four clubs that finish in positions 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th are relegated to League Two.
Other qualification: There is no direct European qualification from League One. The EFL Trophy (formerly the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy) is a separate knockout competition for all League One and League Two clubs.
What to watch in the table
- The title race and top two — Which two sides will claim automatic promotion and the championship trophy? The gap between 1st and 3rd often narrows as the season progresses.
- The play-off chase — Places 3rd to 6th fight for that Wembley final spot. The form of clubs like Wycombe Wanderers and MK Dons can swing dramatically in the final weeks.
- The relegation battle — The bottom four places change frequently. A bad run of four or five games can drop a mid-table side into danger.

It refreshes live throughout each matchday via our data feed. On nights with multiple games, the table may update several times within a few minutes as results arrive. Minor delays are possible immediately after the final whistle.
How many teams are promoted from League One?
Three teams are promoted: the top two automatically, plus the winner of the play-off tournament for the third berth.
How many teams get relegated from League One?
Four teams are relegated from League One to League Two each season — those finishing 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th.
What happens if two teams are level on points in the League One table?
