How to read the J1 League table

The table columns show: position (Pos), matches played (P), wins (W), draws (D), losses (L), goals for (GF), goals against (GA), goal difference (GD), and points (Pts). Teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. In case of a tie on all these, head-to-head results (points, then goal difference) are used, followed by a possible play-off if needed. Tiebreaking rules are set by the J.League organiser and may be adjusted each season.

Format

The J1 League features 20 clubs, each playing 38 matches—home and away against every other team. The season currently runs from late February to early December, with a winter break. From the 2026–27 season, the league will transition to an autumn–spring schedule, aligning with most European leagues.

Promotion, relegation & qualification

The bottom three teams in the final standings are relegated to J2 League (the second tier). The top two finishers automatically qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite group stage, while the third-placed team enters the AFC Champions League 2 (or a qualifying round, depending on annual slot allocations). The J.League Cup winner also secures an AFC spot if they finish in a qualifying position; otherwise, the place passes down the table.

What to watch in the table

  • Title race: The top three or four clubs often trade places deep into the season, with recent champions including teams like Yokohama F·Marinos, Kawasaki Frontale, and Vissel Kobe. Every point matters.
  • Asian qualification: Finishing in the top two or three guarantees a spot in continental competitions, a major financial and prestige boost for clubs.
  • Relegation battle: With three spots to the drop zone, the bottom half tightens dramatically in the final months. Teams near 18th place often fight for survival until the last round.
  • Goal difference swings: Given Japan’s technical style, goal difference can be volatile—watch for big wins or narrow losses that reshape the middle of the table.
  • Calendar transition: The shift to autumn–spring from 2026–27 will affect squad planning and mid-season transfers, adding uncertainty to standings in the coming years.
